1. Introduction

Alan! ("we," "us," "our," or "Company") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our mobile application, Alan! (the "App"), available on iOS and Android platforms.

Please read this Privacy Policy carefully. If you do not agree with our policies and practices, please do not use our App.

2. Information We Collect

2.1 Location Information

Background Location Access:

• Alan! requests access to your device's location in the background to provide real-time navigation and friend-finding features.
• Your location is collected when you explicitly enable background location services and grant permission through your device's runtime permission system.
• Location data is used to: mark and store your tent location; track your position on the festival map; help you navigate back to your tent; enable the "Find Me" strobe feature to help friends locate you; and provide real-time friend tracking (when enabled).

Foreground Location Access:

• Location data collected while the App is actively in use is processed locally on your device.
• We do not transmit your precise location to our servers unless you explicitly enable cloud sync features.

2.2 Device Information

We may collect: device model and operating system; device identifiers (IDFA, Android Advertising ID); app version and crash logs; device storage and battery status.

2.3 User-Generated Content

• Festival name and location
• Tent location markers (stored locally on your device)
• Friend connections and contact information (optional)
• Photos and media you choose to upload (optional)

2.4 Analytics and Performance Data

• App usage patterns (features accessed, session duration)
• Crash reports and error logs
• Performance metrics (to improve app stability)

3. How We Use Your Information

• Core App Functionality: GPS-based tent location marking, friend location tracking, real-time navigation, and the Find Me strobe feature.
• App Improvement: Analysing app performance, identifying and fixing bugs, optimising features.
• User Support: Responding to inquiries and troubleshooting technical issues.
• Legal Compliance: Complying with applicable laws, enforcing our Terms of Service, protecting against fraud.

4. Data Storage and Security

Local Storage: Most user data (tent locations, friend lists, preferences) is stored locally on your device using encrypted local storage. Alan! functions fully offline. Cloud sync is optional and requires explicit user consent.

Data Transmission: Location data is only transmitted to our servers if you explicitly enable cloud sync. All transmissions are encrypted using TLS/SSL. We do not sell, rent, or share your location data with third parties.

5. Permissions and Disclosures

5.1 Location Permission – Prominent Disclosure

Before accessing your location, Alan! displays a clear, in-app disclosure explaining: why we need location access (tent finding, navigation, friend tracking); how location data will be used; and that location access can be revoked at any time through device settings.

On iOS, users grant permission through the standard iOS location permission prompt. On Android, users grant permission through the Android runtime permission system. Users can change location permissions at any time in device settings.

5.2 Other Permissions

• Contacts (optional): Only requested if you choose to enable friend tracking.
• Photos/Media (optional): Only requested if you choose to upload images.
• Notifications (optional): For friend alerts and app notifications.

6. Data Retention

• Location Data: Stored locally. Deleted when you clear app data or uninstall.
• Account Data: Retained while your account is active. Deleted upon account deletion.
• Analytics Data: Retained for up to 12 months.
• Crash Logs: Retained for up to 30 days.

7. Third-Party Services

• Analytics: Firebase Analytics (Google)
• Crash Reporting: Sentry
• Maps: OpenStreetMap/Mapbox

These third parties have their own privacy policies. We recommend reviewing them independently.

8. Children's Privacy

Alan! is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we become aware of such collection, we will delete the information immediately.

9. Your Privacy Rights

You have the right to access, correct, or delete your personal information; opt-out of non-essential data collection; disable location access at any time through device settings; and export your data in standard formats.

GDPR (EU users): Right to access, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability, and objection.

CCPA (California residents): Right to know, delete, opt-out of sale, and non-discrimination.

10. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by posting the updated policy in the App and updating the "Last Updated" date.
